The iOS app is currently £4.99. If you have previously bought the app, you will automatically receive updates for FREE!
When you open the app for the first time, you will be guided through the setup wizard. During this process, you will be shown how to download the food images.
The app has food databases for UK, USA, Austria, Germany, Italy and Portugal.
You can download extra food database images on the Settings page, via the main menu (press the top left icon from the dashboard screen).
Select the ‘Data’ tab and choose the country database you wish to download. Once the country is selected with a green tick, press the download button beneath the tick.
Please note that although you can use only one food database at a time, you can download images from multiple countries so that they are ready to use when you need them. It should take 2-3 minutes to download each database over a stable wifi connection. If you are using the UK database, you will only be able to see totals from the UK database. The same is true for the other country databases.
I’ve changed to a different country food database in Settings and now none of my previous food entries are showing on the dashboard. Why is this?
The dashboard view is specific to a food country database. For example, when you have the UK food database selected, all the entries you have made on your dashboard for the UK will be shown. If you change the database to a different country (e.g. USA), you will not be able to see the UK foods entered in the dashboard until you change the country database back to UK.
You can choose one main nutrient, according to your area of interest (e.g. carbs for diabetes / calories for weight loss), and up to 4 other nutrients. The options available are: carbohydrate, calories, protein, fat, saturated fat, fibre & 5-a-day fruit & veg portions. You can also choose to view the alcohol units for alcoholic drinks that you enter into the app.
The nutrient values have all been updated where necessary, to be in line with the latest nutrition reference values and our current books.
Yes! When initially installing the app, the setup wizard will ask you if you would like to set up targets. If you select ‘yes’, you will be prompted to enter a few personal details and your current weight, height and level of physical activity. The app will use these to calculate your estimated requirements. On the dashboard you can then keep track of your daily intake against your targets for weight loss.
To edit your targets at any time, use the main menu (press the top left icon from the dashboard screen). Select ‘Settings’, then choose the ‘Targets’ tab.
If you are following the 5:2 diet, you can select the ‘5:2’ tab in the Settings screen to choose your fasting days and select your calorie target for these.
View your progress towards your targets at any time from the Dashboard screen. Simply select the Targets icon from the top right of the dashboard (opposite the main menu icon). Aim to keep your nutrient count inside the green rectangles on the chart.
In the Dashboard screen, choose the exercise icon to add your chosen form of exercise. Alter the duration of the exercise and select ‘Add to Dashboard’. If you wish to add another form of exercise, select ‘Add Exercise’ and repeat. Choose ‘Done’ to return to the Dashboard screen.
The exercise icon on the dashboard will show the number of calories you have burned.
If you would like the app to subtract these calories from your daily totals, use the main menu to access the Settings screen. Choose the ‘Display’ tab and scroll to the bottom of the page. You will see the option: ‘Add exercise calories to calorie allowance: Yes/No’. Select ‘Yes’. The app will now subtract any calories you have burnt during exercise from your overall daily totals.
To edit any choices you made during setup, use the main menu (press the top left icon from the dashboard screen). Select ‘Settings’.
From here you can use the ‘Data’ tab to alter the country database you are using; the ‘Display’ tab to alter the nutrients (and units used to measure these); the ‘Targets’ tab to change your weight targets; and the ‘5:2’ tab to turn on the 5:2 function to support a 5:2 fasting diet.
Yes! The app has been adapted so that it will work on the iPad screen.

No. To reinstall the app you need to open the App Store on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Search for the Carbs & Cals app and choose ‘Install’. It’s that easy. You will not be charged twice for an app, provided you use the same iTunes account login.
As long as the phone is an iPhone or Apple device (e.g. iPad), you can reinstall the app. If you have switched to another platform (such as Android) you will need to repurchase the app.

Yes. Go to the main menu by pressing the top left icon from the Dashboard screen and select ‘Settings’. Choose the ‘Data’ tab and scroll to the bottom of the screen. Switch on the ‘Backup data to iCloud’ button and select ‘Backup Now’. It’s a good idea to ensure you backup your data on a regular basis.
The iCloud backup is just to keep a safety backup of your data. Currently, it does not sync your data between different devices (e.g. iPhone & iPad), but we are looking to implement this feature in future.
Yes. Go to the main menu by pressing the top left icon from the dashboard screen and select ‘Settings’. Choose the ‘Data’ tab and scroll down to ‘Export Data’. Here you can choose to export to either a CSV or PDF. Select the data range of the information you wish to export and choose ‘Export’.
We made the decision to remove the recipe feature from the new update. You can now save groups of foods as ‘My Meals’ and this feature has replaced the recipe feature.
The Android app is currently £3.99.
Ensure that you have a wifi connection. Go to the ‘Setup’ screen and choose the country database you wish to download. Select ‘Download Images’. This will take around 20-30 minutes. All foods will then be stored on your phone, so you can access them without an internet connection.

No. To reinstall the app you can do the following:
Open the Play Store app and tap the “Menu” button on the device. Select ‘My Apps’ and tap ‘All’ to see all the apps you have downloaded. (If you’re using a tablet, you may need to tap ‘Downloads’ before the My Apps option becomes visible.) The Google account you’re currently signed into is listed at the top of this screen. Tapping an app in the list will open the app’s page on the store; from there, you can install the app again.
To switch to a different Google account, tap the ‘Menu’ button on your device, choose ‘Settings’ and tap ‘Account’. Note that the account needs to have been added and configured in your device’s settings before it’ll show up in the Play Store app.

Unfortunately this is not possible with the current version of the app. We are looking to add this feature in the 2017 update.
This may happen if you have changed the email address on your Google Play account. Google uses the email address that you purchased the app with to check that you have bought the app.
Completely shut down the app by pressing the back button until you exit the app. Then try opening the app again over a wifi connection. If you continue to have problems please get in touch via our contact form.
We had to take this decision as the link to the supermarket barcode data was suspended. We felt it best to remove the scanner rather than having something that did not work effectively.
